Developed in the 15th Century, The Swiss Degen was classified as a Short Sword/Dagger. It was particularly popular with Swiss mercenary units. Considered a sidearm, the straight blade was around 25-30 inches in length. A somewhat tapered hilt/hand-guard was also built into it. Designed to be used with protective hand armor (gloves or Mail). The Swiss Degen was popular with civilians as well. The Swiss Degen is the direct ancestor to an Artillery Short Sword. This weapon would decline by the 17th Century.
