st Colonies (early in The American Revolution), had small Navies (if they were Coastal Colonies). Originally small “Gundalow” and “Schooner” ships, what they lacked in firepower, they made up for in speed. New York Colony “created” it's Navy with Gundalows (flat bottom vessels). The Ensign used to identify them was a White Field with a Beaver placed center. Long seen in Upper State New York as a source of both food and clothing (pelts), The Beaver was a natural choice to represent The Colony. Short lived, the “Beaver Ensign” (first seen in 1775), would be phased out (mostly by 1778).
