Used by warriors of The Byzantine Empire around the 10th Century, the Menaulion was a heavy classification of war spear. A thick wooden (or iron) shaft (8 to 10 feet long) with a 2 to 3 foot spear head - this weapon was designed to be deployed against heavy cavalry. Capable of breaking through armor plating (at close range), it was popular with heavy (armored) infantry. It's obvious drawback was it's weight and one's ability to throw it effectively.
