These Gladiators were specially trained to “drive” War Chariots in various Games and Events. Often used to represent “enemies”, they were also used for quick “Races” which could be bet upon. Due to the skill required, Essedarius were considered elite and well care for (even loaned out for “private Races”). They wore whatever “armament” was required for their “role”. Mostly unarmed, they also served as a mobile platform for Sagittarius and Spearmen. They normally only wore Tunicas and Coolus helmets. Their use made particularly popular during the reign of Emperor Julius Caesar.
