“The Orphan Brigade” were Confederate Army of Tennessee Units that had been “reconstituted” from the surviving members of other Units (to form new ones). As such, they received their nickname. Under initial command of Gen. John Breckenridge, the Brigade identified themselves with a Blue field. In the center was set a Red “Christian Cross”. 13 white Stars were placed within the Cross to represent the 13 Southern States in rebellion. Carried along with the iconic Battle Flag of The Confederacy, The Orphan Brigade Flag was seen in many of the battles of The Western Theater during The War.
