While the theory of The ''Vengeful Ghost'' can be trace as far back as Ancient Greece, the myth takes on a truly ''modern horror'' tale with Asian Ghost myths and tales. In particular The Japanese Peoples, who believe that ''Good'' does NOT always triumph over ''Evil''. Evil often triumphs and this idea is reflected in much of their stories of Yokai (Ghosts and Spirits). In order for a Spirit to become ''Vengeful'', some wrong must be done in ''physical life''. Murder, theft and denial of some emotion or personal item are common ''triggers''. Once dead, The Spirit cannot ''pass on'' to whatever finality the deceased belief system may encompass. Now stuck on a plane of existence which is neither life nor death The Spirit is angry and often seek some kind of revenge to atone for the transgression suffered in life (and now in death).

Vengeful Ghosts often use their frightening visage to scare and terrify their wrongdoer, often into committing suicide or causing some accident to rid The World of the transgressor. Often too, The Spirit will continue their haunting even up to attacking the family of the cause of their misery. Used as cautionary tales in Asian written culture, Vengeful Spirit ''removal'' is often a long and drawn out process. Sometimes, Exorcists are employed and much of thee ancient rituals simply do not work. The underlying explanation is that The Vengeful Ghost will ''leave'' when ''it'' is ready. Even if this means hundreds of years worth of hauntings and terrors.
