According to The Ancient Greeks (and early Romans) – The ''Necromanteion of Acheron'' was a specialized Temple dedicated to The God Hades and His ''Bride' – Persephone. Located (it is believed) in The City of Epirus, near The Acheron River. It was thought that this waterway was a direct link to The Rivers of Hades in The Underworld. The Temple, unique in that it was constructed completely underground (as befitting The Ruler of Hades), was used only by specially trained Priests. Offerings to ''The Dead'' and those Gods and Goddesses of The Underworld where made before an Altar. Some evidence in literature states that even ''Blood Rituals'' were performed (although it is unclear if these were animal or human). Avoided by The General Public (who feared it as much as respected it), The Temple was said to have been destroyed by natural occurrence (earthquake). Some Greeks also believed that The Necromanteion was another passage into The Underworld, from which a ''Living soul'' could enter The Realm and return again later. Many possible archaeological ''examples'' have been put forward as ''other locations'' for The Temple as well – but some cite that these may have been built well after the original was destroyed.
