The ‘’Holy Sponge’’ was reputed to be an artifact from The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Biblical reference (The Gospel of Matthew), tells that while Christ languished on The Cross, He grew thirsty. A Roman Soldier took a sponge and placed it on His Spear. Dipped into vinegar, The Solder (in mock) – raised up the fluid to Christ’s mouth (f which He refused). Said to have been ‘’saved’’ as a curio by an unknown source, pieces of The Sponge became ‘’Holy Relics’’ and were spread to many later Medieval Church’s and Cathedral’s. so many in fact, that perhaps if joined together again – The Sponge would be many hundreds of pounds in weight. Without any true means of verification, The ‘’Holy Sponge’’ becomes a simple symbol of ‘’popular piety’’.
