The term ''U-Boat'' (''Unterseeboat'') was an Imperial German Navy classification for Submarine. An while very few early Ships of such type were identified as ''UB'', The UB-65 (which was launched in 1916), saw some active service during World War I. But from the very beginnings of it's service, UB-65 earned a ''haunting reputation'' as a ''Cursed Ship''. During it's first Patrol in The North Atlantic, The UB-65s 2nd Officer was accidentally crushed when unsecured equipment came free and crushed Him. Since then, all manner of strange happenings were reported aboard. Crewmen often stated in letters home and with other Sailors in Port, that The 2nd Officer ''never'' left His Ship. He was seen quite often, ''standing on The Deck of The Submarine when surfaced – arms crossed and appearing quite upset''. IF anything ''odd'' happened on The UB-65, it was blamed on The Ghost. So too was the Sub's rather poor performance record in sinking Allied shipping. It was in the English Channel when – in 1918, a British Destroyer supposedly launched a torpedo at UB-65 and ''hit it''. But the blow (which was launched when The Sub was on the surface), was not seen as a ''sinking shot'' (The British wanted to capture Her). When struck, an unusual explosion, far greater than expected – completely destroyed and sunk UB-65. In final, for many years thereafter – Shipping reported a ''Ghostly Submarine'' – flying The Imperial Colors of Germany, floating on the surface of The Channel, complete with a ''Ghostly Officer'', standing ''watch'' on it's phantom Decks.
