Hardly any Fan of Horror Films would not recognize the Historic Stanley Hotel. Located in Estes Park, Colorado, it was a feature of the 1980 Stanley Kubrick Film The Shining (based on a Novel by Stephen King). The story tells of a very paranormally active Hotel watched over by a family of Winter Caretakers (who are driven mad by Ghosts of suicides and murders that occurred there over the centuries). Built for Freelan Stanley, it opened in 1909 (much as the fictional Hotel in the movie did). As with most structures of it s type, accidents and misfortunes had occurred there. Indeed suicides and several murders happened. It was an ideal spot to film The Movie. In fact, some of the movie may be based on real events.
Although many Owners and Corporations have had control over The Stanley Hotel (called The Overlook in the film), it is currently under control of The Grand Heritage Hotel Group. Due to it s high elevation location in the fringe of The Rocky Mountains, The Hotel must close in late November (reopening in February) due to the often impassible snows on the few roads that lead to it. The Hotel had been a hot spot for Paranormal Activity since the 1970s. Cold Spots. Orb sightings and strange odors have been reported. It would also seem that many Visitors have been able to secure proof of other Guests namely Spirits. Many unusual and hard to explain photographs have been produced.
One recently produced photograph bears examination. A Chinese Tourist to The Hotel was taking a photograph of one of The Stanley s staircases. Digital, when examined later the clear image of a Female in old-fashioned dress can be seen. The camera was examined. Nothing was wrong with it. Apparently many other Spirits have been captured in a similar fashion. Although Skeptics cite that The Stanley does indeed capitalize on The Shining (even having a gift shop and attractions dedicated to it), many still say that the paranormal activity pre-dates The 1980 Film. The Cases are of course, a matter for your decision making abilities.
