Pilot Knob, located in The State of Missouri (US) – like the State itself, saw very little actual combat during The American Civil War of 1861-1865. Fort Davidson was built in the early days of The War (originally an earthen structure), on a plain which checked the advances towards four Plateaus (Foothills). Eventually, the erection of a wooden Palisade was followed by a Garrison of close to 1,500 Infantry, supported by several Batteries of Artillery. In 1864, Confederate Forces under General Sterling Price (close to 8,000 Men), engaged in an assault on Fort Davidson – to take the prominent defensive position. The Fort defended itself with great honor, causing Rebel Forces to finally withdraw. Close to 1,000 Confederates were killed, followed by slightly over 200 Federal Defenders. After The War, The Fort – much like many other so deemed temporary structures, were abandoned and left to ruin. In time, all that was left was the original earthen berms. In the 1970s, Fort Davidson was listed as a National Historic Place, with several small ''Cannon Memorials'' placed at the site. But locals of Pilot Knob have said since the 1870s, that The ''Battle'' apparently NEVER ended. This is established by the many Ghost Stories which are still told.
On calm Nights (throughout the year), the sounds of what most assume is Thunder, can often be heard in thee dead of night. EVEN with no such forecast. It is thought that it is the Guns of The Union Garrison, firing their rounds at an advancing Enemy. The overall flatness of the terrain of The Fort is an ideal spot for modern day Civil War Reenactors. On more than one occasion, some have said they have ''seen'' unknown Units in position not ''mapped out' by Event Coordinators. When One is sent to find out ''who'' these ''Confederate Portrayers'' are... they suddenly vanish!. The ''Actors'' seem ''just as real as anyone else'', and often the phenomenon is put off to ''wishful thinking'' or outright hoaxing. However, in the early 2000s, several Electronic Voice Phenomenon experiments were performed in and around Fort Davidson. Several ''Events'' have been recorded, from voices claiming they ''Are in Pain'' to what sounds to be ''Commands'' in The Field.
