According to Arthurian Legend, The Fisher King was tasked with the protection of The Holy Grail – the goal of the primary Quest King Arthur gives to his trusted Knights of The Round Table. The Fisher King (also known as The ''Wounded King'' and ''Maimed King''), is most often described as an ancient Monarch who was wounded in either his groin or legs. As such he cannot stand well nor defend himself for great periods. He is said to be a fisher and as such only consumes this as his primary food (hence his name). Why he was chosen to guard such an important treasure as The Grail is unknown, but a curse is most often associated with The Fisher King. It is said in several non-canonical texts from the 19th Century – that he was late in amassing an Army to defend his Kingdom (which was destroyed). He was charged by God to guard The Holy Cup, but to be forever in pain and maimed from his never healing battle wound. He will challenge all who try to claim The Grail, not to combat but by solving a series of riddles. These are most often associated with Arthur and his reign and well as the future of The English Throne.
