“The Dance of Death” (Danse Macabre), was a widespread concept in The Middle Ages Europe. Rendered allegorically and visually, - Death was being seen as the “ultimate” equalizer of Mankind. In Art, Poetry, Music and Literature, Death is seen as a skeleton. He is actually leading The Living by hand, in a festive – almost “non-frightening” way. This would be seen as “The Danse Macabre”. People (rich and poor), were obsessed with religion (primarily Penitence) – and the consequences of sin. Morality was more out front with The Black Death (and The Hundred Year War) decimating half of Europe. The first known representation of “The Danse Macabre” is from Paris (France) – around 1424.
