A particularly gruesome Torture, born out of Europe’s Thirty Year War – The Swedish Schwedentrunk (aka “The Swedish Drink”), was used on captured German Prisoners. In addition to them, this particular vile application was used by Mercenaries as a means of forcing payment from Civilians of Enemy Towns. In application, The Victim is tied down to a wooden board (his or her arms and legs WELL secured). The Victim is then force fed (via a wooden tube) – a horrid and liquified concoction which could be Feces mixed with soured Milk or other putrid substance. Sometimes, urine mixed with other terrible mixtures (which can only be imagined), were used. The “key” to the Torture was not so much in the ingestion of the putrid and foul substances, but the rapidity in which they were “poured” in to the mouth and throat. Often, great speed was accomplished (seeing that one’s natural “gag reflex” was suitably “suppressed” by the wooden tube). One’s stomach could actually be made to “burst” internally – making this Torture an obvious “Execution”. In most case however, the simple sickness that would follow (despite vomiting one’s stomach contents up), was the result of Sepsis. The Schwedentrunk is still remembered today, after 500 years of elapsed time!
