A ''Protective'' form of Folk Magic, ''Saining'' was an Ancient Scottish Practice, beginning in Pagan Beliefs and progressing (briefly) into early Christianity in that Country. Protection in Saining came from the burning (smoldering) of Juniper and various specific Prayers. Akin to the previously discussed ''Smudging'' Practice and the burning of various incense in Christian Rituals – Saining was used to completely ''fill a Home''. All Doors and Windows needed to be sealed. The Juniper ''smoke'' removed any ''harmful Spirits'' and invited ''Good Ones'', to enter a Home. Often, during the Ritual – food and drink would be offered as well. The use of Juniper and Saining can still be found in use today in some Regions of Scotland.
