The Meitei of Northern India, have a Mythos concerning a fantastical Beast called ‘’Poubi Lai’’. This was said to be a giant ‘’Dragon Snake’’ Creature, which featured antlers on it’s head and could fly. Seen as a ‘’magical creature’’, The Poubi lai would achieve an almost ‘’Divine’’ quality in that Culture’s Folklore. Said to be originally a ‘’Guardian’’ to The Royal Meitei Kings, Poubi Lai would be so honored by the construction of traditional Meitei boats, made in the image of The Dragon Serpent. Carved from wood, it was thought that the frightening visage would ‘’scare away’’ all Evil and protect passengers from OTHER Sea Monsters. Much as The Chinese ‘’Foo Dragons’’ guarded Palaces and Temples, so too did images and icons of Poubi Lai do the same for The Meitei.
