In various African Cultures, a ''Nkisi'' was any Object that was specially constructed to contain a Spirit. These could be either ''Good or Bad''. Often, Nkisi were confused with Fetish Icons. Most Nkisi were small figurines made of hollowed wood (to enable a place for The Spirit to live). It was thought that the mere possession of one was to control the particular magic that that Nkisi held. This practice would migrate to North America with The Slave Trade, and be adopted in some Folk Magic practices as well.
