An offshoot of The Voodoo Folk Religion, ‘’Myal’’ was first recorded by Europeans around 1774 while observing Slaves in Jamaica (transplanting several African Folk Practices). The Belief is that Adherents see that The ‘’Spirit World’’ and ‘’Human World’’ must co-exist. As such, rituals are performed to merge a Spirit with a Human Soul. This is accomplished by consuming an elixir of cold water and various herbs. The specially selected plants induce a form of alcoholic ‘’haze’’ to the Adherent. Next thru the use of music and frenzied dance, a Spirit is thus invited to take up temporary residence in a Human Host. Although not practiced much today, some small Sects can still be found in several Caribbean Islands.
