A prominent figure in Medieval Folklore, Melusine was seen in the 12th Century (first in France, then elsewhere). She is a protective Spirit of all waters. Often shown as a beautiful human female (for to show her as a Serpent wouldn't sit well with The Church!), she was obviously a leftover from an earlier Pagan time. Often seen with wings (in some form to emphasize her supernatural abilities). Melusine was also seen as benevolent. Her legend went well into the late 17th Century.
