Lamia

 Ancient Greece had a plethora of myths and legends designed to impart a lesson or explanation for something hereto unknown. Lamia is no exception. The human mistress of Zeus, this offended his wife  Hera. Lamia was cursed to remain beautiful (at least the upper part of her body!). The lower portion was a giant rattlesnake. Hera also killed all of Lamia children to further her curse. Adding a new appetite for other's young, made Lamia a true Monster. Some later stories have Zeus giving Lamia the ability to remove her eyes which gave her the power of Prophecy.
