In East Asian Buddhism, ''Ksitigarbha'' was a ''Spirit Deity'', tasked as ''Guardian'' of Hell. The purpose of Hell in Buddism, was very different from traditional Western ''views''. Hell is a place were Souls ''purge'' and attempt to transcend their ''problems'' so that they may reincarnate into their next form. The ultimate goal is to achieve a form a ''purity'' which allows then to finally ascend in Paradise with The Buddha (or complete enlightenment). Ksitigarbha is tasked to serve as Guide, constantly leading Souls who have achieved their purging for the ''next level'', to that existence. His overall ''Mission'' will last until the ''last Soul'' is so purged and ''Hell'' is emptied.
