The Practice of Kia Quen goes back to 17th Century China – as a form of Torture. In usage, it was for the extraction of needed information or related intelligence. The implementation of The Kia Quen involved three pieces of bamboo wooden boards or panels. The first two pieces were tied to the outside of the feet with the third laterally across the bottom of the feet of the Victim. The tied ropes went to a pulley system. The tighter the ropes were pulled, the more tension was applied. When needed, the pulley was released, causing all three pieces of wood to ''snap together'' against the flesh. In essence, it was a ''slapping machine''. The tighter the pulley was engaged, the harder the strike. Another variation was used to crush fingers and toes. Other set-ups of The Kia Quen called for less permanent structures. The Torture could be used ''in the field'' by three Torturers. Two served as the Pulley, while the third used a Mallet to smash into the wood, thus causing pain, In this usage, The Kia Quen was very similar to the previously discussed Brodequinn of 14th Century Europe.
