The physical (bodily) reaction known as ‘’Adipocere’’ – while understood by Medical Science, is still somewhat elusive as to just why it forms (and only in specific cases). The reaction is related to Human decomposition. First noted (or at least recorded) in the 17th Century AD, as some Humans decompose after death, soft bodily tissue is replaced with a chalky, white substance – which resembles wax. Hence, it was originally known as ‘’Grave Wax’’. Originally, from a simple superstitious vein – Adipocere was thought to be related to a Hex, Curse or other ‘’proof’’ of Demonic or supernatural activity. In truth, body fats break down as a result of water reacting to a bacterial source during decomposition. Under specific conditions (weather, level of preservation – if any, and location of internment), Adipocere slowly replaces fatty tissue with a waxy substance. The formation of which seems to be limited to those persons of certain ‘’girth’’ (in some cases) – but exhumed examples are also found in ‘’normal weight’’ persons. Dietary and Alcohol intake is also not related. Some Folk Magic conjuring’s require the use of Adipocere, which is ‘’harvested’’ for the purpose.
