Stronghold 2 multiplayer problem!

Recommended Posts

I installed Gameranger and every time I try to join a multiplayer game for stronghold all it does is start up my game and take me to the main menu. That is all that happens. Am I missing something? Does it have something to do with windows 8? I would appreciate some help if anyone knows my problem

Hi @Diego243, welcome to StrongholdNation.

Before we really get into the technical stuff, this has actually been addressed a few times. Could you take a look at the following links and let me know if any help?

If neither do, can you please provide the following information:

  1. Your game version
  2. The game version of all your friends playing
  3. A dxdiag file

Keep us posted :)

I also had this problem, I'm sure I made a topic also Chris where the problem was resolved. I believe it was simply the game versions were different between players. Although that may not be the case for you @Diego243 hopefully you find your answer :)

Alright so I did the firewall thing on one of the posts but still the same problem. The version is v1.4.1 and I only join lobbies that say 1.4.1 so I would assume the people in the lobby are running the same version. I don't know what a dxdiag file how do I check? Thanks for the help btw

No problem, happy to help. :)

If you follow the link I provided then it will show you how to create a dxdiag file.

EDIT: Here it is also: http://wizards.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1271/~/creating-a-dxdiag-file

Yes, if you could attach/post that in the thread that would help a lot.

I had pretty much the same issue and I have the same operating system as you. I fixed mine by launching in compatibility mode for (Windows XP service pack 3) and running as an administrator and with the firewall off. I had my firewall off the whole time so it seems that my previous solutions were probably the ones which solved this problem.

I don't think this is right because I have been using 1.3 on my computer because the Ballista auto-fire was enabled (for some reason it was disabled in 1.4.1) and I played with my friends on GameRanger who were all playing with v1.4.1, which I confirmed after reading this post. :)

Different as in 1.4. I've yet to see a case where 1.3.1 & 1.4.1 are incompatible (bar maps). 1.4.1 & 1.4 are the versions which people were likely using, the same issue happened to me before.

Oh right that makes more sense. I haven't played a lot of multiplayer because I always seem to miss the events and it's quite a lot of hassle to organize and execute them, though I would be willing to play anytime because I am eager to see the multiplayer mechanics and configuration of the multiplayer. I only know that different player colors are possible, which is another reason I am eager to try.

According to this, everything seems to be in order on your end of things. The only thing it doesn't tell us is what version of the game you have.

The symptoms you're describing are that of someone playing 1.4 and someone else playing 1.4.1. This, you can verify by:

Pressing WINDOWS + R -> type "regedit.exe" -> [Press Enter] -> Search the registry for "Firefly" & "Stronghold 2". Check any registry values by left clicking on them and see if anything says either 1.4 or 1.4.1.

Providing you don't alter anything, this will not do any harm to your system. If you change something somehow and don't know what you're doing, without exactly following the guide above, it could break your machine. We are not held responsible if you do.

Could you provide with the exact steps which you perform when playing GameRanger? For example, do you play with random people or certain people?

hello!

I have been searching for few days now for the same issue.. so here is my problem... I have windows 8 and stronghold collection bought on gamersgate.com. I have installed ?STRONGHOLD 2 ?v1.4.1. .. It was my dream playing it with my friends.. but GAMESPY quit so I search on forums and saw that i am able to play SH2 ?through GAMERANGER.. so me and my friend strated it the first time with no problem. but we were at his place connected to his wifi... forget to mention that he have windows 7. So when I came home, the next time we try to connect and play on gameranger one of us hosted for example he.. and my game loaded... but, I was not sent (when the game loaded) to the "map choose lobby"... instead I land in the multiplayer lobby .. the game should automatically send me to the kingmaker lobby where we choose maps and gold etc. sometimes it did but when we are separated (on different wifi connections) it often more doesn't work. Some times I get in the game when somebody other hosts or when i host people are also able sometimes to get in but that is very rarely. so the main problem for me and my friend we get stuck in the multiplayer lobby.

I've try whit the firewall thingy off, also antivirus off but still have problems.. I spend more time trying to get in the game then playing..

I didn't try that with "XP compatibility mode" think that could work? or what could be the problem.... thanks in advance

Welcome @Toni_19!

The actual operating system shouldn't make much of a difference, they're both compatible with Stronghold 2 and I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

From what you've described, I'd say it's a simple patching issue. Make sure that you've upgraded to the latest version on all the machines that you're using. You can find the patch updates from our download section: http://www.stronghold-nation.com/downloads/category/stronghold-2/miscellaneous/

Simply scroll down and you'll find them. Some may be on an additional page.

If you're still having a problem, are you using a steam copy of the game?

Firstly thanks for welcome messages .. also thanks for your reply! Can't be more thankful!?:D

Let's start with the steam copy of the game. I'm new and I do not know what does that mean. I bought the game on GamersGate not on Steam. What to do and what actually means "to have a Steam copy of the game."

As for the patch upgrade, I have a 1.4.1 version of the game. I can try to upgrade from the download section but unfortunately I can't open that link.?

It says: SERVER ERROR "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration, we've been unable to display the page you requested. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused ..."

To have a "steam" copy of the game, means that your game will launch from the Steam client, see: http://store.steampowered.com/about/

If you don't have to launch the steam client when playing your game, then it's not ran through steam. :)

I don't seem to be getting that error, or when I'm not logged in. The only other thing I can do at the moment is enable debug mode, which will show the error to you when you view the page. Can you try again and let me know what else you get?

1.4 needs to be installed before 1.4.1. However, in order to play online .etc, you'll need both patches anyway.

This is slightly late but as I've been on holidays, I haven't had time to post.

If my advice doesn't work then by all means, continue to listen to Lord_Chris.

This can still happen, even though you are still connecting. It's happened to me on a few occasions when playing games with higher latency than usual, eventually after a few minutes it would send me to the lobby screen. Have you tried waiting for a bit? Just to be sure it isn't down to latency/speed?

If not, then I suggest following Chris' advice, it's the best bet you've got :)

When you start the game, and you see the splash loading screen, in the bottom left (or right, I don't remember :P) do you see 1.4.1? If so, then you have the latest version.

COULD IT BE THAT THIS IS MY MAIN ISSUE
Read more

That is a possibility, if you want to fix this you'll have to do some port forwarding.

Luckily I have quite a bit of experience with this due to setting up servers for my friends and I to play :D

Before anything, you'll have to get into your router configuration menu, but even before that, you'll need to know your default gateway:

Assuming you're using windows:

Windows Button > Run (Unless you have the search option built in, like on windows 7) > "cmd" (without quotation marks) > "ipconfig" (without quotation marks) > Press enter

This will bring up quite a bit of information. Somewhere near the top, there should be a sub heading, titled "Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection" if you're connecting to the internet wirelessly. If you are connected through an Ethernet cable, I think it will be called "Wired LAN adapter Wired Network Connection" or something similar :P

In that sub-heading find "Default Gateway" usually this is something like "192.168.1.xxx" the x's being where your router's specific gateway address is entered. Open up your preferred web browser and type the default gateway number into the address bar, "192.168.1.xxx" if there is a prompt for a username and password, try "admin" for both. This is the most common username and password for router configuration. If you know you've changed the username or password, type it in accordingly.

DO NOT post your default gateway or any other IP address in this topic!

This is as far as I can take you for now. Provide me with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) for example, my ISP is BT. Once we've established this, I can further help you :)
