Macemen are powerful ambush troops in Stronghold 2. They're often overlooked, but if used correctly are actually quite a useful troop.
The Maceman wears leather Armour for protection, which means that they are more protected than regular Spearmen, however do not have the same level of protection that steel Armour brings. Considering the leather armour, Maceman are suprisingly fast in speed. This makes them the perfect troops to raid an enemy village and then return before they are caught.
It takes an Archer 11 shots to kill a Maceman, while a Crossbowman can kill a Maceman in as little as three shots. This large difference is down to the effects of the leather armour.
You can recruit Maceman from the rank of Baron, and you will also need a Mace before you can recuit Macemen. As well as a Mace, you will also need Leather Armour.
Maces are produced through the Blacksmith's Workshop, which becomes available at the rank of Royal Champion and you can immediately start producing Maces from this point onwards, although you cannot actually recruit Macemen until the later rank of Baron. Note also that by default the Blacksmith Workshops all produce Swords for Swordsmen and Knights unless you specifically toggle the production to Maces. To do this, simply left click on the Blacksmith's Workshop and select the Mace icon.
You will also need a single recruit from the campfire before you can recruit a Maceman, as well as Honour. Honour can be produced by the means shown in this article.
Tip: Considering Maceman are so agile and protected against regular Archers, they are the ideal troop to quickly manouver on the battlefield. Use them to protect any penetrated areas in your defence, or to smash enemy buildings which will have an adverse effect on your opponent's popularity. Just be careful to keep them away from Knights and Crossbowmen, who can do a lot of damage!
