In Stronghold 1, the editor is very easy to use and very quickly allows you to access the area you would like to be. This editor is also reused in Stronghold Crusader, and has some minor changes. For a list of those changes please see this page. From the main menu of the game, you will arrive here:

This page allows you to choose which scenario type you would like to use for your map. The possible selections (from left to right) are as follows:

  • Load a working map
  • New stand-alone mission
  • New Siege-That mission
  • New multiplayer map

Hovering over the respective icons will reveal text in the box below them informing you what that scenario type is. Additionally, the hand icon allows you to return to the previous screen. Once you have selected one, you will then be redirected to this screen:

Once you have selected your map size, you will be redircted to a screen similar to this:

From this screen, you can save your map, go to it and edit it, and add a map desciption through the box on the left hand side of the screen. To do this, click on the "edit" button and type in your map description. Once you click the button "To map" you will arrive here:

In the bottom right corner is the minimap, this displays a smaller version of what is on the map itself. On the opposite side, is a key. Clicking on this will return you to the screen above where you can save or edit your map further. To the right of that are three seperate icons horizontally which alter how your map is made. The first one on the top is the size of what you add to your map. For example, textures. What sized texture you add is decided by this tool. You can left click to change it forwards through the list, and right click to send it backwards. Finally, the other icon is a delete tool.

This allows you to delete buildings, walls .etc. on your map. The next six icons are as follows:

From left to right, top to bottom they are as follows:

Above the minimap on the right side of the screen, you have another tab with a picture of a castle. This allows you to switch to buildings and place them instead of landscape. You can select the tree tab to return to editing the landscape of your map.

The buildings tab is as follows:

The icons along the bottom of the screen are for different sections of buildings. They are as follows:

  • Castle Buildings
  • Industry Buildings
  • Farm Buildings
  • Town Buildings
  • Weapon Buildings
  • Food Processing Buildings
  • Place People
  • Place Ruins

The shields on the right of the sidebar represent player colours, and by default your own player colour is selected (Blue). The key icon returns you to the menu, the cross icon is another delete icon, and the arrow will undo the last building created (if at least one building has been placed). With some attention to detail, you can create some very nice maps. The feature which allows troops to move in the editor is very useful because it allows you to destroy buildings, animals .etc and move them around the map. The image below is a prime example:
